My refrigerator’s not working. I came home today and the door was open.?
I own an old Kenmore side by side refrigerator. I came home today and the door was open. The refrigerator part is not working but the freezer part is working just fine. Is there some kind of reset button I press? Can I fix it myself? Or, do I need to call a repair man?
The open door probably caused the coils to get all frosted over. This blocks the air going in to the refrigerated section. That is why the freezer seems to work but the fresh food area is warm.
And the thermostat is located in the refrigerator so it will run and run trying to cool.
You can empty it and shut it off for a day and thaw it out or otherwise it should eventually clear on it’s own. Depending on how frosted it became it will take a defrost or two to clear. And that can take a day or more.
If not frosted too bad it will clear sooner. Worse case the air return may also be blocked and you will still need to shut it off and let it melt to clear it.
