can you grow seeds from a fruit at the grocery store?
OK so I have been posting really random questions tonight.
I just posted a question saying I had no food and was hungry..I found a cucumber in the bottom rack thing in the fridge and chowed down..
It also got me thinking. Could I take the seeds out of that cucumber and plant it? is there a chance it would grow at all? since it’s been refrigerated.
so yes or no? I googled it and couldn’t find anything particularly addressing my question.
The seeds in a mature Cucumber can be dried and planted and they will grow. Cucumbers sold in stores usually are not mature. They are picked before the seeds develop enough to be hard and not pleasant to eat. So the Cucumber you bought at the store may or may not have seeds developed enough to be fertile.
Refrigeration would not harm the seeds. Freezing would kill the seeds.
You can scoop the seeds out and let them dry, then plant them next spring. It is too late for them to have enough time to grow vines and bear cucumbers this year.
